    International audienceConsider a two-dimensional domain shaped like a wire, not necessarily of uniform cross section. Let V denote an electric potential driven by a voltage drop between the conducting surfaces of the wire. We consider the operator A_h = −h^2 ∆ + i V in the semi-classical limit h → 0. We obtain both the asymptotic behaviour of the left margin of the spectrum, as well as resolvent estimates on the left side of this margin. We extend here previous results obtained for potentials for which the set where the current (or ∇V) is normal to the boundary is discrete, in contrast with the present case where V is constant along the conducting surfaces

    Coexistence of a triplet nodal order-parameter and a singlet order-parameter at the interfaces of ferromagnet-superconductor Co/CoO/In junctions

    We present differential conductance measurements of Cobalt / Cobalt-Oxide / Indium planar junctions, 500nm x 500nm in size. The junctions span a wide range of barriers, from very low to a tunnel barrier. The characteristic conductance of all the junctions show a V-shape structure at low bias instead of the U-shape characteristic of a s-wave order parameter. The bias of the conductance peaks is, for all junctions, larger than the gap of indium. Both properties exclude pure s-wave pairing. The data is well fitted by a model that assumes the coexistence of s-wave singlet and equal spin p-wave triplet fluids. We find that the values of the s-wave and p-wave gaps follow the BCS temperature dependance and that the amplitude of the s-wave fluid increases with the barrier strength.Comment: 5 pages, Accepted to Phys.     Motional Broadening in Ensembles With Heavy-Tail Frequency Distribution

    We show that the spectrum of an ensemble of two-level systems can be broadened through `resetting' discrete fluctuations, in contrast to the well-known motional-narrowing effect. We establish that the condition for the onset of motional broadening is that the ensemble frequency distribution has heavy tails with a diverging first moment. We find that the asymptotic motional-broadened lineshape is a Lorentzian, and derive an expression for its width. We explain why motional broadening persists up to some fluctuation rate, even when there is a physical upper cutoff to the frequency distribution.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    Radiative Transfer Effects in He I Emission Lines

    We consider the effect of optical depth of the 2 ^{3}S level on the nebular recombination spectrum of He I for a spherically symmetric nebula with no systematic velocity gradients. These calculations, using many improvements in atomic data, can be used in place of the earlier calculations of Robbins. We give representative Case B line fluxes for UV, optical, and IR emission lines over a range of physical conditions: T=5000-20000 K, n_{e}=1-10^{8} cm^{-3}, and tau_{3889}=0-100. A FORTRAN program for calculating emissivities for all lines arising from quantum levels with n < 11 is also available from the authors. We present a special set of fitting formulae for the physical conditions relevant to low metallicity extragalactic H II regions: T=12,000-20,000 K, n_{e}=1-300 cm^{-3}, and tau_{3889} < 2.0. For this range of physical conditions, the Case B line fluxes of the bright optical lines 4471 A, 5876 A, and 6678 A, are changed less than 1%, in agreement with previous studies. However, the 7065 A corrections are much smaller than those calculated by Izotov & Thuan based on the earlier calculations by Robbins. This means that the 7065 A line is a better density diagnostic than previously thought.     CoWBP capping barrier layer for sub 90 nm Cu interconnects

    Abstract Electroless cobalt films have been obtained by deposition using a plating bath containing two reducing agents: dimethylamineborane (DMAB) and sodium hypophosphite. This formulation allows spontaneous activation on copper followed by auto catalytic electroless plating. CoWBP and CoBP films are proposed as diffusion barriers and encapsulation layers, for copper lines and via contacts for ULSI interconnect applications. The crystalline structure, chemical composition and oxidation states of the elements were studied, as well as the electrical resistivity, topography and morphology of the films. The film composition was characterized as a function of the solution composition; the barrier properties of the films were tested and an oxidation resistance study was conducted. The films were characterized and the results show that they can be applied as capping layers for ULSI copper metallization

    Conformational changes and loose packing promote E. coli Tryptophanase cold lability

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Oligomeric enzymes can undergo a reversible loss of activity at low temperatures. One such enzyme is tryptophanase (Trpase) from <it>Escherichia coli</it>. Trpase is a pyridoxal phosphate (PLP)-dependent tetrameric enzyme with a Mw of 210 kD. PLP is covalently bound through an enamine bond to Lys270 at the active site. The incubation of holo <it>E. coli </it>Trpases at 2°C for 20 h results in breaking this enamine bond and PLP release, as well as a reversible loss of activity and dissociation into dimers. This sequence of events is termed cold lability and its understanding bears relevance to protein stability and shelf life.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We studied the reversible cold lability of <it>E. coli </it>Trpase and its Y74F, C298S and W330F mutants. In contrast to the holo <it>E. coli </it>Trpase all apo forms of Trpase dissociated into dimers already at 25°C and even further upon cooling to 2°C. The crystal structures of the two mutants, Y74F and C298S in their apo form were determined at 1.9Å resolution. These apo mutants were found in an open conformation compared to the closed conformation found for <it>P. vulgaris </it>in its holo form. This conformational change is further supported by a high pressure study.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We suggest that cold lability of <it>E. coli </it>Trpases is primarily affected by PLP release. The enhanced loss of activity of the three mutants is presumably due to the reduced size of the side chain of the amino acids. This prevents the tight assembly of the active tetramer, making it more susceptible to the cold driven changes in hydrophobic interactions which facilitate PLP release. The hydrophobic interactions along the non catalytic interface overshadow the effect of point mutations and may account for the differences in the dissociation of <it>E. coli </it>Trpase to dimers and <it>P. vulgaris </it>Trpase to monomers.</p

    A class of well-posed parabolic final value problems

    This paper focuses on parabolic final value problems, and well-posedness is proved for a large class of these. The clarification is obtained from Hilbert spaces that characterise data that give existence, uniqueness and stability of the solutions. The data space is the graph normed domain of an unbounded operator that maps final states to the corresponding initial states. It induces a new compatibility condition, depending crucially on the fact that analytic semigroups always are invertible in the class of closed operators. Lax--Milgram operators in vector distribution spaces constitute the main framework. The final value heat conduction problem on a smooth open set is also proved to be well posed, and non-zero Dirichlet data are shown to require an extended compatibility condition obtained by adding an improper Bochner integral.Comment: 16 pages.
